Sermon “A Little Democracy”

In a special service, we recognize Boston’s Charter Day and the city’s 394th birthday. Drawing inspiration from the theme of the Partnership of Historic Boston’s fall lectures, “Tyranny or Liberty? – Political Choices Then and Now,” the Rev. Dr. May will explore the theological underpinnings of the Puritan choice to gather as a church under a covenant. In what ways does this 1630 covenant reflect a move away from structures of religious tyranny and towards new liberties? Did the men and women who signed the covenant understand themselves to be forming a little democracy? In revisiting the 1630 covenant, the Rev. Dr. May also kicks off a year-long series of reimagining the covenant through religious questions we may still be asking ourselves today.

For Families:  Childcare for children ages 1-8 will be available. Older children are invited to remain in the service or to join the childcare assistants for stories, play, and craft.
