Children & Families
Since its founding in 1630, the First Church congregation has always included children and adults of many ages. We are excited to be rebuilding our resources for returning and new families with weekly programming September through mid-June.
As Unitarian Universalists (UU), we support learning through questions and curiosity. Drawing on progressive values of respect, equality, and sustainability, we teach kids to honor spiritual lessons from many places, including science, different religions, activists, as well as their own experiences and questions.

For our youngest children, ages 1-8 years, religious education is provided weekly in the John Winthrop PreSchool space on the ground floor. Two childcare providers, Anna DeMetrick and Noah Herrick, support a time of safe play using a range of resources, including stories and craft reflective of UU values. Parents are invited have their children join them in the sanctuary through the Story for All Ages or to drop off their children before the service. Noah and Anna remain after the service for a bit if caregivers wish to grab a cup of coffee and chat for a minute.

Early in each service, there is a Story for all Ages led by a minister or member of the congregation-including the Rev. Hank Peirce, Assistant Minister of Storytelling who joins us monthly. Following the story, children are invited to join in a classroom for more exploration of the day’s theme. Children of all ages are always welcome in the sanctuary throughout any service as a valued part of our multi-generational community. Quiet activities are available near the rug at the rear of the sanctuary.
As we work to rebuild our program and support for children and families, we invite feedback from caregivers about their hopes and needs for raising ethical, compassionate kids full of wonder in the 21st century. Please reach out to Rev. Stephanie to share your thoughts, ask questions, or to volunteer to support programs for children and families.
