Sermon: “Encounters with Public Art”
Barbara Martin

We may seek out works of public art or come upon them unexpectedly—statues in parks or civic plazas, murals on buildings, installations that pop up to interpret a historic site or engage the passer-by. Existing in our own space and often speaking to our history or community, these works prompt response and conversation.

Throughout my life, contemporary works of public art have brought together past and present in new and memorable ways. The opening of the Boston Triennial suggested that this is a summer to share some of those encounters and conversations.

Images of public art referred to during the sermon are available at this link.
