Sermon: “Perceiving Pearls”

On this date in 1968, the First Church in Boston was devastated by fire. Four years later, then minister Rhys Williams celebrated the newly rebuilt church in his annual report writing, “When a pessimist looks at an oyster, he thinks of [food] poisoning. When an optimist looks at that same oyster, he thinks of a pearl.” As we consider the challenges facing our own moment, how might our perception of possible futures influence how we feel and what we do now?

For Families: Childcare for children aged 1-8 is available with Noah and Anna. Ebonié Smith-Cooper will share a story for all ages in the service. Following the story, older children are invited to remain in the service after or to join Noah and Anna for stories, play, and craft. Children of all ages are also always welcome in the sanctuary.
