• Marching for sun and wind power with Boston Interfaith Climate Allies

A SUN DAY Pilgrimage was held on Sunday, September 21 and Rev. Stephanie and First Church Boston members marched! Boston Interfaith Climate Allies, along with other concerned citizens walked from Copley Square carrying their signs and banners advocating for solar and wind power to free our world of fossil fuels and protect our world.

There was a joyful atmosphere with bands playing and marchers singing as the group moved down Newbury Street, across the Common to the area below the Shaw Memorial at the State House. The former Chief of Energy, Environment, and Open Space, Rev Mariama White-Hammond spoke along with  Buddhist, Jewish, Catholic, Protestant and Zoroastrian religious leaders at the gathering.

  • Bring water for our Water Communion tradition

Yellow to blue colors with at drop of water with the text Water CommunionOur traditional Water Communion will take place at our Sunday service, September 14.

Please bring a bit of water from a meaningful place or event from your summer, or water will be provided.

Participants will be invited to briefly share what makes this water meaningful to them. In considering your remarks, please think more of a poetical phrase that highlights the meaning. (For example, Rev. Stephanie brings water from a gathering of seminary friends in late July.)

  • A moment of stillness before services on Sundays

We have started a self-led meditation practice on Sundays at 10:15 up in the church bell tower. (Yes, First Church Boston has a bell tower!) It is a great way to quiet your mind and get ready for services.

Thanks to Dan Palazuelos, who at a recent service explained his journey incorporating meditation into his own life. He identified a number of books that served as touchstones along the way:

    • On the Road by Jack Kerouac
    • The Three Pillars of Zen by Philip Kapleau
    • Wanting Enlightenment is a Big Mistake by Zen Master Seung Sahn
    • What Makes you not a Buddhist by Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse
    • When Things Fall Apart by Pema Chodron
